JUDA - The Oakley Union Methodist Church of Juda will be holding the 23rd annual "Soup Day" fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall of the church.
Advance tickets are $7 for adults ($7.50 at the door), $3 for children 10 and under ($3.50 at the door) and free for children under 5. The price of the ticket provides a meal of four types of chili and homemade soups, hot dogs, cheese sandwiches, a wide variety of homemade desserts served with ice cream and a beverage.
The proceeds from the fundraiser will help pay for remodeling projects on the 98-year-old church building. In the past, money has been used to make major repairs on the building, such as a new roof. Currently, the repair fund has enough money to start construction on the new ceiling, lighting and electrical system updates in fellowship hall. The building still has many issues that need attention, and with 35 church members, successful fundraisers are important. A portion of the fundraising proceeds also will go into the yearly operations budget.
Over the past few years, "Soup Day" has received the support of some Wisconsin companies. Pan of Gold Bakery, a company in Sun Prairie, provides all of the buns and bread that are served. Schoepp's Ice Cream Company Inc. of Madison provides all of the ice cream products used throughout the year for the church's fundraisers.
There has been renewed interest this year from other large Wisconsin companies to lend support to the church's future fundraisers. The Oakley Union church also has an interesting Civil War history, which the church hopes to bring to light this fall.
The Oakley Union church is a sister church to the larger Zion United Methodist Church in Juda, sharing the same pastor. Pastor Vicki Brantmeyer holds services every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., with Sunday school at the same time.
During the month of March, the church is hoping to increase its attendance from an average of 25 to 50. Anyone interested in attending the church or getting information regarding the fundraiser, membership or location, may contact Jan Ladwig at the church office at 608-934-5398, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
