MONROE - Oct. 1-7 is National 4-H Week and Green County is celebrating the opportunities that the 4-H youth development program offers.
As part of the National 4-H Week festivities, Green County 4-H families will be wearing a 4-H T-shirt or a green shirt to school or work Oct. 4. Local 4-H clubs also are putting together window displays.
With 7 million young people participating across the globe, 4-H is the largest youth development organization in the world. In Green County, 4-H is a program of the University of Wisconsin-Extension, engaging more than 530 4-H members and 210 adult volunteers.
4-H is open to all youth in 5-year-old kindergarten through high school, whether they live in the city, village or country. No matter what a youth's gender, race, ethnicity, creed or ability, 4-H offers the opportunity to learn new things, meet others and be active in community service.
Green County 4-H has 18 community 4-H clubs across the county. Families are invited to check out different clubs before selecting a club that best fits their family's schedule, location and interests. Get started by contacting the organizational leaders of potential clubs to learn more about and potentially visit them.
Youth can join 4-H any time of year but to participate in the 2018 Green County Fair, enrollment must be completed by Nov. 1. The cost of becoming a 4-H member averages $15 per member per year; financial assistance is available for families in need.
