MONROE - A spouse is in and out of the hospital due to symptoms of bipolar disorder. A grown child returns home to live with his parents because his untreated schizophrenia doesn't allow him to function well in society. A young daughter is diagnosed as suffering from major depression. Where do family members turn when they are faced with the problems and heartaches that come from dealing with mental illness on a daily basis?
NAMI Green County will offer the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program specifically to help families of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness. This 11-week course will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting Sept. 17 in Monroe.
The classes will cover information about mood disorders (major depression and bipolar disorder), schizophrenia, panic and anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder; coping skills such as handling crisis and relapse; basic information about medications; listening and communication techniques; problem-solving skills; the recovery process; and self-care around worry and stress. The curriculum has been written by an experienced family member mental health professional and will be taught by NAMI Green County family member volunteers who have taken intensive training as course instructors.
More than 150,000 people in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico have completed this course. "It is a wonderful experience!" says a recent participant. "It balances basic education and skill-training with emotional support, self-care, and empowerment."
There is no fee for the course but enrollment is limited. For more information and to register, call (608) 328-9387.
