MONTICELLO - Chelsea Norquay of Monticello, along with 30 other contestants from all over the United States, competed in the National Make It With Wool contest held in Las Vegas Jan. 24-27.

She was accompanied by her parents and Carol Battenberg of Johnson Creek, Wisconsin Director of Make It With Wool.

Norquay modeled her crocheted trench coat created with grape heather 100 percent Peruvian yarn. Her garment was judged on fashion and construction by a panel of national judges.

A style show featuring all contestants was held during Saturday night's American Sheep Industry banquet. The wide array of garments reflected the beauty and versatility of wool and demonstrated the creativity and practiced skill of the contestants.

Along with sightseeing and a tour of Bally's theater, Norquay had opportunities to meet and talk with sheep producers and Make It With Wool contestants from all over the country.

Major sponsors of the national Make It With Wool contest are the American Sheep Industry and the American Sheep Industry Women.

Wisconsin's major sponsor is the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative. Plans are already under way for Wisconsin's 2008-09 Make It With Wool contest which will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 at Jefferson County Fair Park in Jefferson.

Wisconsin's garment competition includes age divisions from preteens through adults.

Wisconsin also sponsors a Quilt and Afghan competition and a Novelty category. The novelty category includes items such as scarves, mittens, shawls and hats made of 100 percent wool and fibers or wool blends.
