MONROE — First Baptist Church will be celebrating its 60th year July 22 with a special service with special speaker John Goetsch from West Coast Baptist College in Lancaster, California. Special music will be presented by the Miller family, from Madison. A special testimony time will be held at 9:30 a.m. with morning service at 11 a.m. A picnic on the grounds will follow the morning service.

The church was officially started in January of 1958 with pastor James Cooper as the founding pastor and was located in a storefront on the square. It was the first Baptist church in Monroe. The current church was built at its new location on 31st Avenue in 1963, along with the parsonage.

The church has had eight pastors over the past 60 years. Matthew Spoonhour has been the pastor for 13 years. The church offers children’s ministries, adult Bible studies and a small food pantry through appointment only, as well as other outreaches to serve the community.

The building is handicap accessible. This special occasion is open to the public and transportation services may be provided for those who are in need.
