MONROE - The Monroe Youth in Government program is seeking applications for youth to apply for youth seats on the Monroe City Council and City of Monroe committees.

Eligible youth must currently be in eighth, ninth, 10th, or 11th grade and either be a resident of the City of Monroe or be part of the School District of Monroe.

The Monroe Youth in Government program gives youth a forum to ask questions, speak their minds on community issues and influence local decisions. It empowers youth voices while fostering the development of confident, independent, motivated youth leaders.

Application forms are available online at the Green County UW-Extension website at green.uwex.edu. Any adult can nominate a student for the program - school staff, parents, church leaders, etc. Students also may self-nominate. Completed application forms must be submitted to the Green County UW-Extension office by 4:30 p.m. March 23.

Youth who apply for the program will go through an interview process. Selected participants will be notified by late spring and will start their terms with the city in the fall of 2018. Prior to taking the oath of office, the youth will be required to participate in a brief orientation program that will familiarize them with city government and the roles and responsibilities that council and committee members have.

The City of Monroe, the School District of Monroe and Green County University of Wisconsin-Extension have partnered together to offer this Youth in Government program.
