Monroe Theatre Guild begins renovations of its new facility

MONROE - Visitors to Monroe's Square on Monday, Dec. 13 may have noticed a crane and a truck with a lot of steel beams on board and wondered what was going on. The steel was for the beginning stages of the performance space for the new home of the Monroe Theatre Guild in the old Stage department store just off the north side of the Square.

"The contributions to our Capital Campaign have reached a level where we have been able to pay off the outstanding balance of the loan for the building, and we have enough also to begin renovations to the building. It has been very exciting," said Mark Miller, MTG's technical director.

"We have completed the framing and boarding of the make-up room, rehearsal area, and new private bathrooms. The costume room is nearly completed, and the framing and plumbing for the new main bathrooms is almost complete."

In addition, work has been started on the new HVAC system, as well as the structural modifications to the lower level of the building which will create the performance space and lobby areas. The HVAC work is being performed by Monroe Heating, while the structural modification and steel work is being handled by Carter Machine Works. Erickson Plumbing and Heating is handling the new plumbing work, while A-1 Electric is charged with the electrical work. The entire project has been designed by architect Dave Haroldson, and is being supervised by Don Amacher.

"The level of community support for this project has been very encouraging," said MTG Capital Campaign Chairman Rick Maliszewski. "The number of people who have contributed time and money to this campaign has been fantastic. We have a great variety of small pledges and large pledges, and we have many contractors who are donating some of their time and materials for the project."

Maliszewski said that pledges and donations to the capital campaign are still being accepted. "We have reached many of our goals with regard to the campaign, but not all cost of building materials are completely raised. The last major hurdle of our campaign is to raise funds for the renovation of the outside façade of the building. We have plans that are approved by the city historical committee, so if anyone has been waiting for a special time to make contributions to the campaign, now would be a great time."
