MONROE - Sexual Assault Recovery Program hosted a Take Back the Night ceremony Tuesday, April 15, at the Square.

The ceremony was planned and organized with support from the district attorney's office and Abuse Prevention Task Force of Green County.

SARP responded to 28 sexual assault cases in Green County in 2007. Pennie Meyers, SARP program director, stated that 24 of these victims were under the age of 18. The average age of a sexual assault victim in Green County is 15.

Speakers were District Attorney Gary Luhman; Pauline Mau, sexual assault nurse examiner at the Monroe Clinic; Georgine Walls of Green County Human Services; and State Representative Brett Davis. Walls received statewide recognition for her work to improve services for sexual assault victims in Green County.

Many health care professionals; representatives from the Department of Corrections; SARP staff and advocates; educators; local community organizations; and community members attended. The ceremony continued with a walk to the United Way building, and ended there with the shattering of a glass jar filled with victim's statements to symbolize the shattering of the silence.

The victim statements had been read out loud by different participants of the ceremony. It is estimated that only 5 to 20 percent of sexual assault victims are reporting sexual assault crimes to law enforcement. Rape remains the most underreported crime in the United States.

Take Back the Night will be organized annually in Green County as a part of the National Sexual Assault Awareness month activities in April of every year.

A spaghetti dinner to benefit the sexual assault recovery program was held on Thursday, April 24, at Grace Lutheran Church in Monroe.

SARP is a member of the Green County Abuse Prevention Task Force and Green County United Prevention Professionals for Youth.
