MONROE - Wear a red poppy to honor all veterans who have served their country during the past 91 years in conflicts from World War I through the present war in the Middle East. Poppy Day in Monroe is Friday, May 16.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Poppy Days throughout the nation to raise money exclusively for hospitalized and needy veterans and their families. In Wisconsin there are three veterans hospitals located in Madison, Milwaukee, and Tomah.
There is also Camp American Legion near Lake Tomahawk where the veterans receive needed therapy and rest. The Veterans who use these facilities also receive personal items, treats, stationery, tote bags, tray favors, postage and many other items.
In December, the Christmas Gift Shop receives benefits from the Poppy proceeds. The hospitalized veterans can choose Christmas gifts for their families. The gifts are wrapped and shipped at no cost to the veterans.
Headquarters for Poppy Day will be at the Monroe American Legion Post Home located at 1627 12th Ave.
