One day, other program openings announced

MONROE — Monroe Parks and Recreation Department has openings in several one-day programs during July and August.

Nerf Battles

Get ready for an Ultimate Nerf Battle Tuesday, July 28 from 8:45-10:45 a.m. Children should bring their own Nerf gun and goggles. They should have their name on gun and initials on darts. Children ages 6-12 years will be challenged with target practice and a Nerf battle through cardboard obstacle course. This program has been moved outdoors to Recreation Park North shelter.

Unicorn & Pony Land

Come dressed in your unicorn or pony outfit and bring your own stuffed animal with you to our Fantasy Land of Unicorns & Ponies on Wednesday, July 29, 8:45-10:45 a.m. We’ll share games and crafts as we dream of a world where real unicorns exist! We will also have a unicorn there to ride...actually, a pony dressed up as a unicorn. Jane Swiggum will be doing face painting. This program has been moved to Recreation Park North shelter.

Free Family Game Night at Race Car Demo Night

Parents, grandparents and children ages 5 and older are invited to meet at Discount America Motor Sports located at 910 30th Street on Thursday, July 30 at 5-6 p.m. to watch cars race on a dirt track. Trent Wyssbrod and Tommy Wood will be there to show their race cars that children can sit in. There is no fee but the event requires registration.

Day in Construction

Children ages 3-12 years old will be able to climb in and see the world from the drivers’ seat of big trucks, backhoes and skid loaders on Thursday, Aug. 6 from 8:45-10:45 a.m. Stations include digging in the dirt to find buried treasures, trying out the obstacle course and designing your own construction hats. This program has been moved outdoors to Recreation Park North shelter.

Klub Kindness

Children ages 5 to 12 years old will make friendship bracelets, paint kindness rocks and play games that promote kindness on Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 2-4 p.m. We will make a project for Monroe Health Services and walk over to have root beer floats with them. This program has been moved outdoors to Recreation Park North shelter.

Healthy Snacks

Children ages 5-12 years old will learn what makes snacks healthy and how to make them on Monday, Aug. 17 from 2-4 p.m. at the Community Center, lower level of City Hall. They will be making healthy snacks and having fun playing games. Parents will be asked to provide one ingredient for our snacks to minimize costs.

“Me and You” Paint Night

Kids age 5 and older can bring a grown-up to join for some painting fun on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 5:30-7 p.m. at the Community Center. You will each get an 8”x10” canvas to paint and you’ll each paint one half of the picture. After you are done you can place it up on your wall as one.

Down and Dirty

Come join us on Thursday, Aug. 20 from 2-3:30p.m. at Rec Park South Shelter for shaving cream dodgeball, water balloon crossfire, “eat it or wear it” and more. Wear old clothes or a bathing suit with flip flops. Bring a beach towel and change of clothes. The event is open to children ages 5-12.

Tennis Lessons

There are two options for morning and two options for evening lessons.

Evening lessons will be on Tuesdays until July 28, with a 5:30-6:30 p.m. session for 3-5 graders. Then 6:30-7:30 p.m. session is for 6-8 graders. The first 30 minutes of the session will be lessons and the next 30 minutes will be match play. Instructors will be Kate Maliszewski and Cecily Burch.

There will be two morning lessons Mondays-Thursdays, 9:15a.m.-10:15a.m. for 3-5 graders and 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. for 6-8 graders, with Fridays as rain days. Session one is July 6-17 and session two is July 20-31. Alex Lentz will teach session one and Matt Bordner will teach session two.

Tennis balls will be numbered and athletes are asked to bring their own rackets, if they have them. Otherwise, Parks & Rec rackets are available and will be spray sanitized after each session. Athletes will “gel up and gel down” before and after lessons.

We ask that everyone observe social distancing. Parents may come to watch and are asked to wear face masks and bring their own lawn chairs rather than sit on bleachers. Masks for students are optional. Participants may register by stopping down to Parks & Rec office, lower level of City Hall, or online at monroewi.activityrec.com.

Water Exercise

There are two opportunities for Water Exercise at the Monroe Pool this summer.

Water Zumba, sponsored by Monroe Clinic SSM Health, with certified instructor Connie Wyssbrod will be offered at the Monroe Pool on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5:15-6 p.m., beginning June 16 through Aug. 20. There is no fee if you have a season pool pass.

We are also offering Water Aerobics with certified instructor Bridget Cotter, Fitness Director at the Senior Center, starting on June 23. Aerobics will be on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10-10:45 a.m. There is no fee if you have a season pool pass.

Swimming Lessons

The goal is to provide a non-contact swim lesson opportunity for children.

Swimming lesson levels:

Pre-school swim lessons and Levels 1, 2, and 3 will all be parent/child to avoid contact with non-family members. Our instructor will teach the children to swim and the parent will be there to hold the child and help manipulate their arms and legs if need be. Instructors will be out of the water on the pool deck.

Levels 4, 5 and 6 for advanced swimmers will be taught by instructor from the pool deck

We will need to have three participants for each level to run that level of class.

Kick boards used for swim lessons will be placed in a separate bin after use to be disinfected.

One bin will be for used kickboards that have not been disinfected. One bin will be used for kickboards that have been disinfected.

Half hour lessons will be offered in three-week sessions, two days per week: July 6-July 22

Swimming lesson sessions will be available as follows:

10:15-10:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays

5:15-5:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays
