MONROE - Monroe Middle School presents the colorful musical, "Once On This Island, Jr." with performances 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, March 6-7, in the middle school auditorium.

The junior version of the Broadway smash features a cast of 54 singing and dancing seventh and eighth grade students, coached by a team of directors, Nadine Whiteman, Dave Bristow and Katie Doyle.

Based on time-honored traditions of Caribbean storytelling, the action unfolds in the midst of a violent tropical storm on a unnamed island in the French Antilles. Taking shelter in a small hut, a group of peasants gather around a fire and keep fear at bay by spinning powerful musical tales of life, love, loss and rebirth. Their lively songs and dances fill the night and transform all who hear them.

Warm your hearts and lift your spirits with a visit to the Monroe Middle School production of "Once on This Island, Jr." Tickets available at the door, donations accepted.

The Junior Optimist Club will sponsor a spaghetti dinner before the show, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, in the Monroe Middle School cafeteria. Cost is $5 adults, $4 students and seniors.
