MONROE - A field trip for Monroe High School Business Law students on Tuesday, April 15, allowed them to participate in two unique and educational opportunities. First, students traveled to Madison to participate in the Court with Class program. This award-winning program is designed to make the Wisconsin Supreme Court proceedings understandable and accessible to all high school students in Wisconsin. The students' visit included the opportunity to listen to attorneys present oral arguments and see the behind-the-scenes activities of the highest court in the state. Prior to the visit, students were sent information about the court system, including biographies of the justices, a summary of the case to be heard, and other law-related materials to help the students prepare for their day in court. The case the students heard was one in which the Wisconsin Supreme Court will decide on a medical malpractice case involving two doctors, a medical clinic, and their insurers. The case examines whether a default judgment was properly entered against an insurance company that allegedly failed to file a timely answer. Before, leaving the Capitol the students were invited to visit the Senate Chambers and to visit with State Senator Jon Erpenbach's staff.

Following the tour, a trip to the Green County Jail enlightened students as they learned about the security systems in place at the jail, participated in a tour, discussed career opportunities, and met with officers about their weapons and vehicles. Students met with Rick Campbell and several Green County Sheriff's Department staff who shared their experiences with the students.
