Monroe: Library programs coming

MONROE - Registration begins June 9 for Catch the Reading Bug, a summer of fun-filled programs at the Monroe Public Library. Would-be entomologists, herpetologists, and horticulturists will be exploring the aisles of the library, searching for new reading interests. Children and students of all ages will be able to choose their own reading fun this summer from a variety of programs and hands-on workshops. Brochures describing the events and listing dates and times of programs are available in the children's room of the library. There is no charge for any of the summer programs offered at the Monroe Public Library.

The South Central Library System, in partnership with Wisconsin businesses, has provided additional incentives to enrich the summer's reading rewards programs. Pizza Hut, the Madison Mallards baseball team and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are among the partners.

Wild Wednesday programs for students entering first through sixth grades will feature professional performers and hands-on learning opportunities. All Wild Wednesday events will take place on Wednesday afternoons from June 18 to July 30. Most programs will begin at 1:30 p.m. Registration for both Buggy Fun and the second Wild Wednesday program, Fishing for Laughs, will begin on June 9. Registration for other Wild Wednesday events will be taken two weeks before each program.

Reading Explorers, a reading rewards program for children ages three to six, including children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall, will also begin on June 9. Youngsters may read with an adult or older student to earn small weekly prizes. Programs for Reading Explorers will include Picture Book Stories, held each Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Each program features books and stories, songs and rhymes, plus activities, snacks or crafts.

The Metamorphosis @ Your Library reading program for students entering seventh grade through high school encourages teens to explore new interests while reading for fun. Using the library's laptops and projection system, they will share and explore Internet game sites, step back in time to 10,000 B.C. with the new DVD release of a popular movie on the big screen, and try Wii games and crafts.

Programs at the Monroe Public Library are open to children of all abilities. For more information, contact the Youth Services Librarian at 328-7023.
