MONROE - Several Monroe Girl Scouts from two local troops have banded together to form the Georgia Girls, who are working together to raise funds to earn their way to Savannah, Ga in the summer of 2016.

Savannah is the birthplace of the founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Lowe.

The group consists of girls entering fourth through seventh grade. The diversity of ages allows for role modeling and opportunities for leadership, as well as giving the opportunity for girls from all the area schools to know each other and form a solid and positive leadership circle as the middle school challenges approach.

Members of the troops are selling nuts and candy, selling cookies and participating in a variety of other money-raising efforts designed to teach them the value of hard work and goal setting, planning and follow-through. The troops' food wagon will be at Piggly Wiggly on Saturday, July 19 and July 26. The Georgia Girls will be at the Concerts on the Square.

Bake sale dates will be held on July 18 and Aug. 1 at Woodford State Bank.

The girls will also have a booth in the library parking lot during Cheese Days, where they will be selling flower bulbs and Girl Scout cookies.
