Monroe: First city band concert a success

MONROE - Due to threatening weather throughout the area, the Sesquicentennial Concert, first of the Main Street Concerts on the Square series, was performed in the safety of the Performing Arts Center on Thursday, June 12.

Col. James Bittlaff, aka Peter Kelly, opened the ceremony dedicating the newly refurbished cannons and carriages that once again adorn the Northwest corner of the Courthouse grounds.

Nate Roth followed him with historic detail relevant to the cannons. Historic Monroe members were recognized for their funding of the restoration and replacement of the cannons and carriages.

The Monroe City Band directed by Randy Schneeberger then took the stage presenting their Sesquicentennial program featuring typical community band pieces through time. Kathy Reffue served as MC for the first concert ever performed by the City Band in this PAC venue.

Pieces included Wagner's "Under the Double Eagle," excerpts from Rossini's "William Tell Opera," Lehar's "Merry Widow," Robert Smith's "Where the Black Hawk Soars," LeRoy Anderson's "Bugler's Holiday," Alan Silvestri's "Polar Express" theme and music from the "Simpsons." The featured piece of the Sesquicentennial concert was "King Moto," a piano piece written by long-time Monroe resident Earl Clark and transcribed for the band by Randy Schneeberger.

The Monroe Women's Club commissioned this work and sponsored this concert "almost on the Square." The evening of music appropriately concluded with John Phillip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever."

The next Main Street Concerts on the Square will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 26 and features the Stateline Playboys. Box lunches are offered by Café Claudeen, Fox Feathercreek Bakery and Garden Deli.
