MONROE - Twenty-two Monroe families are hosting 20 students and their two chaperones from our partner school, the Liceo Experimental Bilingüe de Pococí in Guápiles, Limón, Costa Rica. The group arrived late Friday, Dec. 26, and they will be in Monroe until Jan. 17.

During this time they will share time with their host families, visit sites of interest in the area and attend school. They have prepared a dance performance for the high school and host families as well.

Monroe High School Spanish teacher, Lisa Hendrickson, has led exchanges with schools in Costa Rica since 1995. This is the fourth exchange with the Liceo Experimental and Costa Rican leader Tobías Ramírez Gutiérrez. Monroe Spanish teacher, Michelle Kister, is the second local coordinator and Costa Rican teacher, Eliana Barrantes Esquivel, accompanies the Costa Rican group for her first trip to the United States.

Some of the experiences planned for the Costa Rican guests include: trips to Madison, attend a Monroe girls basketball game, visit the capitol building, and shop, Chicago, an overnight at the Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells with a visit to the H.H. Bennett Museum.

On a local level, the students will tour government facilities in Monroe and visit local agribusinesses in addition to roller skating at the Roller Den, ice skating at S.L.I.C.E. and bowling at Leisure Lanes.

At school they will attend classes, and receive special classes in physical education from Curt Miller and Noel Herbst, in family and consumer sciences from Melody Loeffelholz and in social studies with Jerry Guth. Visit: http://www.monroeschools.com/webpages/MKister for a calendar of events.

The Monroe High School students worked hard during the 2007/2008 school year to raise money to pay for the costs of hosting which include transportation and admissions for the Costa Rican guests.

This year, the Monroe students are raising money to help pay for them to travel to Costa Rica for two and one half weeks in June/July to complete the exchange as guests of the Costa Rican students and their families.

The Monroe High School Costa Rican Exchange is modeled after the Monroe High School German Exchange which has been in place since 1988.

It brings a unique opportunity for families in Monroe to share their lives, and to experience another language and culture. The friendships last long after the exchange ends with continued visits and correspondence.
