MONROE - The annual Green County Land Judging Contest date has been set for Wednesday, July 2. This contest is set up with Junior and Senior Divisions for youth belonging to a Green County 4-H Club as well as FFA Chapters. Individuals may judge or teams of four individuals may be formed.

The goal of this type of contest is to develop an understanding of our soil resources and to educate youth to make sound decisions about land use.

Participants study erosion, slope, texture, subsoil, crop production, land capability, and conservation practices. They also learn to evaluate soils for non-agricultural uses including residential, transportation, and recreational land capability.

Coaches for this contest are adult 4-H leaders, FFA Chapter advisors, and FFA alumni.

The Monroe Moose Lodge, Rufer and Son Excavating, Coplien Painting, Green County Department of Land Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and University of Wisconsin Extension co-sponsor this annual event.

4-H or FFA youth interested in participating in this contest should contact their local club leader or chapter advisor. For clubs and chapters participating for the first time, call Todd Jenson at the Department of Land Conservation, (608) 325-4195, ext. 119, or Alissa Grenawalt at the University of Wisconsin Extension (608) 328-9440 for additional information. Registration for the contest is due by June 20.
