MONROE - Four eighth graders at Monroe Middle School were honored April 7 in Sauk Prairie for earning one the highest awards available in the Girl Scouts.
Devri Bennett, Haley Jinkerson, Lydia Butler and Kaitlyn Murphy, members of Cadette Troop 3218, received their Silver Award pins after completing projects that impacted their community in a way that was personal to them, as well as sustainable.
Bennett and Jinkerson worked together on a project called "Hospital Cheer Donations." The girls made blankets, bracelets and cards, and also collected toy and book donations for the American Family Children's Hospital where Jinkerson had been a patient.
Troopmates Butler and Murphy knitted and crocheted winter hats, mittens and clothing for those who need them most. The items went to Family Promise, a collaboration between churches in Green County to take in homeless families and helps adults find employment. Butler and Murphy are also teaching a younger Girl Scout troop how to knit and crochet, so that they might continue the project.
These girls represented one of just 40 troops in Badgerland's 23-county jurisdiction that received silver awards this year. Also recognized at the awards ceremony were 11 gold award Girl Scouts and 2018 graduating seniors across the council.
"There is something so special when we get to see, in person, the significant impact this organization is making on our girls, and in turn, the impact the girls are making on their communities," said Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland CEO Marci Henderson.
Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland Council serves more than 7,300 girl members in 21 counties in south-central and southwest Wisconsin, as well as Houston County in Minnesota and Allamakee County in Iowa. The council has service centers in Madison, La Crosse, Platteville and Janesville. More information can be found at www.gsbadgerland.org.
