MONROE - In keeping with the Lenten season, the Friends In Faith Ministry of the Monroe United Methodist Church will host "Focus on the Cross" at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 20 at the church, 2227 4th St.
Presented by Marjorie Bengston, Madison, the program will offer a history of the cross and a look at the four basic styles - the Latin, Tau, Greek and St. Andrew. Bengston will also be displaying part of her extensive cross collection.
Although widely recognized as a Christian symbol, the cross has appeared in many variations throughout human history and has been used around the world in religion, art, architecture, heraldry and flags. Bengston has been collecting crosses for 35 years, ranging from jewelry to decorative wall hangings crafted from a variety of materials including traditional substances like metal, wood, glass, plastic and textiles and extending to the more unusual like fish bones and walnut shells.
The free program is open to the public.
