MHS names citizenship award winners

MONROE - Monroe High School recognized Patrick Gellings and Abby Kennison as 2010 Citizenship Award winners. The Citizenship Award, given since 1928, is based upon scholarship, character, leadership, and cooperation. The selection committee is made up of faculty, administration and community members.

Patrick Gellings, son of Steve and Lisa Gellings, was a member of National Honor Society, Badger Boys' State, Future Business Leaders of America, Forensics, Spanish Club, Student Senate, Octagon, Junior class president, Prom Committee and Prom Court. He was a member of Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Pep Band, Marching Band, Pit Orchestra, Graduation Band, Jazz Band, National Honor Society Brass Choir, Solo and Ensemble, Tri-State Honors Band, UW-Platteville Band Camp and Rebecca A. Lewis All-Star Camper Award. Athletically he was involved in soccer and tennis, US Tennis Association Summer League, Rebel Net 'n Ten Volunteer, Monroe Area Soccer, Optimist Tri-Star Soccer, Madison Area Referee Soccer Unit, and park and recreation tennis league and a youth soccer referee.

Gellings was involved in many extra-curricular/leadership activities: Green County Humane Society, Apostolate to the Handicapped and television Mass server, St. Victor Parish Altar Server, Young Americans 4-H Junior Leaders, Green County 4-H and volunteering in Women's Club Christmas Drive, Monroe High School Blood Drive, NHS Rake 'n Run, food pantry, Leukemia/Lymphoma Fundraising Carnival and Wisconsin State Optimist Speaking Contest.

He is employed as a dietary aide at Pleasant View Nursing Home and is also a lifeguard/swim instructor. His future plans include attending University of Wisconsin-Platteville pursuing a career in music education with the goal to teach instrumental at the high school level.

Abby Kennison, daughter of Julie Frie and Mike Kennison, was a member of National Honor Society, Costa Rica Exchange, Forensics, Key Club, MHS ReVue, Fine Arts, and Badger Girl's State, MHS Academic Top Ten student to attend the Badger Conference Honors Banquet. Athletically she participated in basketball, softball and volleyball, Club Intensity Volleyball, summer softball teams, summer basketball league, and Dance Academy. Musically she was involved in Acapella Choir, Madrigal, Musical, Show Choir, Vocal Jazz, Freshman Choir, Badger Conference Honors Choir Participant, and National Anthem singer at various events.

Her community volunteering included: Wisconsin Public Television volunteer, St. Victor's Parish server and cantor, Rake 'n Run, Junior Class project/community garage sale, Women's Club Christmas Stocking, Adopt a Senior Citizen Project, Green County Government participant, Community Showcase of Talent, Monroe Clinic volunteer and Parent/Teacher Conference Guide.

Kennison has been employed as a phone representative at Swiss Colony. Her future plans include attending University of Wisconsin-Madison to major in education with the goal of being an English teacher.
