MONROE - The Green County Master Gardeners Association will hold the 11th Annual Gardening Symposium "Garden Inspirations for All Seasons - Straw Bale Gardening; Innovative Gardening Ideas! Try Something New!" from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 10 at the Peppercorn Banquets at the Ludlow Mansion, 1421 Mansion Drive.
Both experienced and novice gardeners are encouraged to attend this public seminar. Participants will receive lunch, refreshments and resource materials with their paid registration.
This symposium is designed to encourage new techniques, educate and provide some fun. A silent auction and door prizes will be included.
The keynote speaker will be Joel Karsten, who earned a Bachelor of Science in horticulture from the University of Minnesota and is the author of "Straw Bale Gardening," a globally best-selling book in many languages. A popular speaker, he makes appearances around the world at events celebrating innovation, garden enthusiasts and healthful lifestyles.
The process involves planting vegetables, root crops, vines and/or flowers into the top and sides of a straw bale. Straw bale gardening is convenient, easy, fast and flexible, and the advantages of using a straw bale over traditional soil-based gardens are numerous.
The other speakers and topics for the symposium include:
Jane Stevens, Four Elements Organic Herbals, Baraboo, who will discuss using herbs as home remedies for everyday ailments; Ann Pearce will present information on "Handling Invasives and Early Detection"; Kasey Tousignant of KC's Landscaping will give guidelines on "Using Mulches: Weed Control and More"; Stephenson County, Illinois, Master Gardeners will share their expertise on seed saving.
Early registration for the Annual Gardening Symposium closes March 1. After March 1, the price goes up for late registration and walk-ins. More information is available through the Green County UW-Extension by calling 328-9440 or on the website: http://green.uwex.edu.
