Madison: Art of Note raffle, auction supports student musicians

MADISON - Eleven visual artists have turned unplayable violins into exquisite works of art to benefit student musicians. These 2008 Art of Note violins will be raffled off to support the educational programs of The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras. These violins will be on display at the WYSO Winterfest concerts March 8 and 9 and at the Milward Farrell Fine Art Gallery on Monroe Street, the Promega Corporation on East Cheryl Parkway, the University Bookstore at Hilldale, the University of Wisconsin Hospital Surgery Waiting Room off Highland Avenue, Goodman's Jewelers on State Street and at the Grace Chosy Gallery on Monroe Street.

Opening receptions will be at the Promega Corporation Biopharmaceutical Technology Center, 5445 E. Cheryl Parkway, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at the Grace Chosy Gallery, 1825 Monroe Street, Madison.

The fifth annual Art of Note gala raffle, reception and auction is from 6 to 9 p.m. June 5 at the Madison Club. Check and bid on the list soon to be posted at http://artofnote.org

More than 360 WYSO student musicians from 37 Wisconsin communities benefit from this project, including Christopher James of Argyle who plays trumpet in the concert orchestra.

Raffle tickets for the 2008 Art of Note campaign can be purchased from any WYSO student and parents through June 4 for $10 each or six for $50. Each ticket allows you to select a specific violin. For ticket inquiries, e-mail: artofnote@artofnote.org The goal of this year's campaign is to surpass last year's effort, which raised nearly $40,000 for student scholarships.

The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras is a not-for-profit educational program which now boasts four orchestras. The Youth Orchestra, for students ages 13 to 18, is the most advanced of the four groups. Philharmonia is the second-level orchestra for students ages 12 to 18. The Concert Orchestra is composed of students ages 11 through 16 and the Sinfonietta is an all-string ensemble for students aged 10 through 14.
