MONROE - For the 22nd consecutive year, the Monroe Arts Center is sponsoring the Wisconsin Regional Arts Program (WRAP) Competition and Exhibit through the month of February. The exhibit, which opened on Feb. 5 in the MAC Frehner Gallery, will conclude on Feb. 28 with a lecture, judging and critique by professional artist, Dunnell Kendrick-Parker of New Glarus.
This event is co-sponsored by the Monroe Arts Center and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Liberal Studies and the Arts. The Wisconsin Regional Arts Program began in 1940 to recognize and encourage non-professional artists. WRAP competitions and workshops are held in various regions of Wisconsin throughout the year and are open to all area non-professional artists over the age of 18. The work from each region is judged and critiqued by a professional artist, and awards are given for state exhibit winners and for honorable mention winners. Winning artwork from each region will be put on display Sept. 19 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, at which time additional prizes will be awarded.
An educational workshop is held on the last day of the exhibit. This year's workshop will be a lecture by New Glarus artist Dunnell Kendrick-Parker.
She holds bachelor of science and masters degrees in art education from UW-Madison. She has taught both elementary and high school art in the Madison Metropolitan School District and currently teaches at Blackhawk Technical Institute in Monroe.
She continues to work in the medias of drawing, painting and collage from her home studio. Kendrick-Parker will be sharing her journey as an artist, showing examples of her work and discussing the Art of the Critique. She will then judge and critique the artwork in this year's competition.
This WRAP workshop is free to the participating artists, but is also open to the public for a $5 fee.
The workshop/critique will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Monroe Arts Center.
