MONROE — Monroe Arts Center opens the 2019-20 MAC Stage Series of entertainment at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 with a concert by twice Grammy-nominated songwriter, singer and musician Beth Nielsen Chapman. 

Nashville-based, Chapman has released 13 solo albums and penned seven number 1 hits with songs recorded by Willie Nelson, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Tanya Tucker, Emmylou Harris, Michael McDonald, Trisha Yearwood, Keb Mo’, Roberta Flack, Waylon Jennings, Indigo Girls and Faith Hill’s mega-hit This Kiss, ASCAP’S 1999 Song Of The Year.

Chapman’s songs have been heard on television’s ER, Dawson’s Creek, Providence, and Felicity, and in movie soundtracks, including “The Prince of Egypt,” “Message in a Bottle,” “The Rookie,” “Where The Heart Is,” and “Practical Magic.” Her 2014 album Uncovered features legendary guests from Vince Gill to Duane Eddy. In 1997 her hit song “Sand & Water,” written in the wake of her husband’s death, was performed by Elton John to honor the memory of Princess Diana. In 2016 she was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Last year brought the release of, “Hearts of Glass,” a powerful collection of songs that dig deep into the place within us where vulnerability meets strength.

In the fall of 2016, Beth, along with Olivia Newton-John and Amy Sky created and toured behind an inspiring project called Liv On – a new album to aid and comfort those experiencing grief and loss while using the power of music to heal.

Throughout her career, Beth has been in demand as a keynote speaker and teacher of workshops on creativity and songwriting, to grief and healing through art. She has also taught at universities internationally including the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, and the Berklee School of Music, among others. 

While in Monroe, Chapman will teach a Creativity and Songwriting Workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21. For any writer in need of a boost of creative energy, this journey into the workings of the creative flow will cover some tips and advice on how to step fully into your center and find your writing voice.
