Local youth compete in KC free throw contest

MONROE - The winners of the local Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition, sponsored by Supreme Advocate Harold Lamboley Council 01471, competed for District 42 honors on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the gym at Brother Dutton Catholic School in Beloit. Seven boys and girls from Monroe were eligible to participate. All youths ages 10 to 14, regardless of affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, who were declared winners at five different Councils in District 42 were eligible to participate.

Brayden Zettle, David Keegan, Logan Weckerly and Madison Katzenberger from Monroe all were declared winners in their respective age groups, earning the right to compete at the Diocesan Level scheduled for Saturday, March 26 at Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids.

The following are winners for the District 42 competition: Brayden Zettle, Monroe, boys age 10; David Keegan, Monroe, boys age 11; Logan Weckerly, Monroe, boys age 13; Parker Alsteens, Belleville, boys age 14; Madison Katzenberger, Monroe, girls age 10; Grace Schulting, Belleville, girls age 11; and Tara Hanna, Verona, girls age 12.

Each of these winners, along with champions from the other districts in the Madison Diocese, are eligible to compete in the diocesan competition with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels of competition.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, diocesan and state competitions. International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus international headquarters based on the scores from the state-level competitions. Last year, more than 223,000 sharpshooters participated in more than 3,200 local competitions.

The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal service organization with more than 1.8 million members in more than 14,000 local councils.
