Local students to perform in Dance Wisconsin's 'Nutcracker'

MADISON - Dance Wisconsin's is celebrating 40 years of its classic version of the original "Nutcracker" this year. Performances will be at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Wisconsin Union Theater.

The Tchaikovsky score will be performed by the Dance Wisconsin orchestra and conducted by Taras Nahirniak. The Monona Grove High School singers will accompany several pieces.

Guest artists are Gillian Murphy and Marcelo Gomes, principal dancers with American Ballet Theatre. They will be joined by the Dance Wisconsin Company and dancers from numerous southern Wisconsin studios. Many alumni from the past years have returned to perform in this wonderful holiday tradition.

Dancing from the area are Jessica Schmitt, daughter of Peter and Julie Schmitt, dancing in the roles of Soldier Doll, Waltz of the Snowflakes, Spanish and Chinese. Schmitt studies at Monona Academy of Dance and is a new member of the Dance Wisconsin Company.

Emily Ginocchio, daughter of David and Martha Ginocchio, will dance in the roles of Waltz of the Snowflakes, Chinese and Waltz of the Flowers. Ginocchio also studies at Monona Academy of Dance, is a company member of Dance Wisconsin and is a graduating senior from New Glarus High School.

Other dancers from the area are Spencer, Quentin and Kersten Vestin, children of Paula and Chris Vestin. Spencer is dancing in the roles of Big Mouse and Russian; Quentin is dancing in the role of the brother Fritz; and Kersten is understudy for Bon Bons.
