Scholarship

MONROE — Green-Rock Audubon Society has awarded scholarships of $1,500 each to three students in Green and Rock Counties who are entering their freshman year.

Ruby Sheaffer, Monroe High School, is enrolled at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota. She intends to study Political Science and Environmental Studies to equip her for stewardship of the earth through government service. As she grew up on an organic farm, she enjoyed being outdoors and listening to the frogs singing.

Hannah Chady, Milton High School, is enrolled at UW-Whitewater. She plans to major in Environmental Studies — Wildlife Biology.  Her goal is to protect endangered species and to reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean. She has planted milkweed for Monarch butterflies and has a tradition of cleaning part of the  Ice Age Trail every Earth Day.

Jonathan Flowers, Milton High School, is enrolled at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He expects to major in Conservation Biology and Political Science, eventually becoming an environmental lawyer. He walks with his grandfather to pick up trash along the roadside.  He says, “Someone has to make a difference in the world.”

These awards are made possible by the generosity of the Arthur and Lela Gibbs Trust at the Stateline Community Foundation. For more information about the Green-Rock Audubon Society, visit their website, greenrockaudubon.org, or their Facebook page.
