RIPON - Two local students were elected as mayors during the 73rd session of the Badger Boys State youth leadership program, after a day of campaigning and debate. The leadership program was held June 14 through June 21 at Ripon College.
Dane Siegenthaler of Darlington High School and Matthew Coplien of Monroe High School were elected as mayors of their Badger Boys State City. At the start of the program, Badger Boys State citizens are grouped into 27 cities. Each city is named after a former Wisconsin governor. Siegenthaler represented Badger Boys State City, Upham. Coplien represented Badger Boys State City, Bashford.
This year, 858 high school juniors attended Badger Boys State and spent eight days learning about all aspects of Wisconsin's city, county and state government. With the assistance of over 100 volunteer counselors, staff and numerous prominent speakers, students learn everything from operating efficient government offices, passing ordinances and balancing a budget to amending the Badger Boys State constitution.
June 16 also marked the start of Badger Boys State's Schools of Instruction. The schools bring business professionals and community leaders to Ripon to teach Badger Boys State citizens about careers in the fields of law, peace officer, leadership, public speaking, parliamentary procedure, public finance, lobbying and campaign strategies, among others.
