MADISON - Three area dancers will perform in Dance Wisconsin's "Nutcracker Fantasy," held at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 in Mitby Theater at Madison College.
"Nutcracker Fantasy" is a family-friendly alternative to traditional Nutcracker productions. Under the artistic direction of Jo Jean Retrum, "Nutcracker Fantasy" takes the best of Tchaikovsky's ballet and infuses it with plot twists, original music, a live chorus, and ballroom dancing.
The setting of the first act is Uncle Drosselmeyer's Toyshop. The roles of dolls and children in the toyshop are performed by dancers from local studios including Monona Academy of Dance, Dance Wisconsin's company studio.
The second act continues with a journey through a mystical ice forest to find the Sugar Plum Doll. The act showcases the talents of Dance Wisconsin's senior company and introduces the guest artists in a pas de deux. Besides Tchaikovsky's score, the program includes original music by Taras Nahirniak. Blake Walter will conduct Dance Wisconsin's orchestra and the Monona Grove High School singers will accompany several pieces.
Dancing from the area is: Jessica Schmitt, Monticello, daughter of Julie and Peter Schmitt; Haliey McIntosh, Monroe, daughter of JoLynn and Jim; and Emily Ginocchio, New Glarus, daughter of David and Martha. Schmitt will dance the lead role of Marie; McIntosh will dance the roles of Spanish, Waltz of Poinsettia's and Waltz of Snowflakes. Ginocchio is dancing the roles of Chinese, Ice Forest and Waltz of the Snowflakes.
Ticket prices are $20, $28 and $32, with a $2 discount for seniors and half price for children.
