MADISON - Travis Marty and Tyler Symes of Monroe are among 44 Madison College construction and industrial trades apprentices who each received a $1,500 "Tools of the Trade" scholarship from Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation and Affiliates. Symes and Marty are preparing for careers as electricians.

Most apprenticeships combine up to five years of classroom instruction and on-the-job training. With Tools of the Trade scholarships, apprentices also can purchase tools, clothing and equipment necessary for their trades.

Since the scholarship program was founded in 2013, 94 percent of recipients across the Wisconsin Technical College System either have completed or continued their apprenticeships the following semester.
