MONTICELLO - The Monticello American Legion Auxiliary Unit 256 is sponsoring a VA Gift Shop project to benefit the patients at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Madison and their families.
All donations should be unwrapped so veterans may select and personally wrap the gift for Christmas-giving, but those who donate items may attach or insert their name for acknowledgment. Monetary donations are also accepted for articles that need to be replenished throughout the year.
The most requested and suggested items for men, women and children include personal care products, socks, underwear, sweat pants or lounge wear, T-shirts, hats, mittens, gloves, phone cards, gas cards, forever stamps, greeting cards, gift cards, board games, art supplies, puzzles, books, toys, dolls, action figures and bagged candy.
Many of the hospitalized vets are from out of state and away from their families for months at a time while recuperating from surgeries and during rehabilitation. A part of the VA Hospital also includes an organ transplant unit and hospice care. The gift shop is open year-round and provides shopping for the vets during their hospital confinement. Hospitalized veterans may select, at no cost, a donated gift for their family members or their own personal needs.
The Christmas decorated donation boxes for the VA Gift Shop have been placed at Gempeler's Supermarket, Francois Oil Gas Station and the Bank of Monticello, all in Monticello.
Checks may be made out to: American Legion Auxiliary/William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital. List on the check memo and envelope "VA Gift Shop" or to any of the following project areas: Transplant, Hospice, Homeless. Send checks to: Rose Wenger, Madison ALA Volunteer Office, William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital, 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI 53705.
The donation boxes will be picked up at noon from the donation sites on Thursday, Dec. 22 and delivered to the VA Hospital. More information is available by calling Barbara Unke, Monticello American Legion Auxiliary President, at (608) 293-0903.
