Lake/river group lists winners from its annual carp contest

ALBANY - Lake Winnetka Sugar River Improvement Association recently announced an update on the Sugar River and Lake Winnetka.

Over the summer, fishermen gave good reports of game fish catches, along with many stringers full of carp, especially while fishing at night or in the early morning hours.

Over Labor Day weekend, stringers and buckets of carp were counted and weighed as they were entered into the annual Lake Winnetka/Sugar River Improvement Association's Carp-O-Rama fishing contest. This year was the group's 14th annual Carp-O-Rama. The group's primary goal is to maintain the scenic beauty and navigability of the lake and river.

There were 16 participants, with five contestants winning prizes for the number of carp caught and one special prize for the largest carp determined by weight.

First prize of $50 for catching the most carp was divided up among Wilbur Boss; John, Kori and Kayla Hawkins; Darrel Walters; and Danny Brill. The largest carp submitted by the group weighed in at 7 pounds.

Second place prize of a rechargeable spotlight went to Tad and Tate Harnack for bringing in 46 carp. They also won $50 for submitting the largest carp, which weighed in at 7.92 pounds.

Third prize of a Lasko electric heater was won by Darren and Alex Richter, Allen Carstenson and Gunior Timmons. The group brought in 12 carp with the largest one weighing in at 6.7 pounds.

Fourth prize of a rechargeable flashlight went to Bill Mitchell and Conner Trow. They brought in 12 carp. The tie was broken by having the two tied contestants submit their largest carp for weight. The largest carp submitted by weighed in at 6.3 pounds.

Fifth prize of an LED clip-light with whistle was won by Katie Gavigan and her daughter Cheyenne. They brought in two carp.

A 155 total of carp were removed from the lake/river during the contest.

The association also reported an increase in trash along the river, predominantly from below the Wisconsin 59 Albany Bridge all the way through Decatur Lake.
