Knowledge contest winners advance

MONROE - The Knights of Columbus Knowledge contest was held Dec. 12 and 13 at the Middle School. First place winners will advance to the regional contest in March. If a first place winner is unable to go, then the second place winner becomes eligible to compete.

Sixth grade

• Math: Keyton Friske, first place; Nickolas Barnes, second place;

• Spelling: Javier Cifuentes, first place; Carley Arneson, second place.

Seventh gradE

• Math: Mark Jenson, first place; Reece Golackson, second place;

• Spelling: Sarah Sabatke, first place; Elizabeth Pendergrass, second place

Eighth grade

• Math: Taylor Soddy

• Spelling: no participants.

The Knights of Columbus Math and Spelling contest for fifth graders was held the week of Dec. 3 at Abraham Lincoln, Northside, Parkside, and St. Victor schools. Building winners are as follows:

St. Victor's School

• Math (four contestants): Garrett Gogin, first place; Benjamin Latimer, second place; Nash Von Kaenel, third place;

• Spelling (five contestants): Shannon Seitz, first place; Jack Schluesche, second place; Ashley Wilhite, third place

Northside School

• Math (11 contestants): Caitlynn Kamps, first place; Brandon Addison, second place; Jaron Kuester, third place;

• Spelling (eight contestants): Jonathon Steiner, first place; Adam Ninmer, second place; Haley Schmidt, third place

Parkside School

• Math (17 contestants): Robert Weeden, first place; Traiten Gorr, second place; Jordan Miller, third place;

• Spelling (12 contestants): Krystle Robb, first place; Sami Curtis, second place; Kayla Beyer, third place;

Abraham Lincoln

• Math (12 contestants): Abigail Yurs, first place; Alexis Severson, second place; Mitchell Keith, third place;

• Spelling (nine contestants): Ellis Erb, first place; Isabel Bazley, second place; Anna Meritt, third place;

Building winners and all participants receive certificates. The first place city-wide winners in math and spelling each receive an engraved plaque and are eligible to compete in March at the Diocesan Level Knowledge Contest, where they will compete against other winners from the southwestern part of the state. Diocesan winners will advance to the State Level Contest to be held in April.

City-wide winners

• Math (44 contestants): Caitlynn Kamps, first place; Brandon Addison, second place; Garrettt Gogin, third place;

• Spelling (34 contestants): Ellis Erb, first place; Isabel Bazley, second place; and Jonathon Steiner, third place.

The City-wide winners, Caitlynn Kamps and Ellis Erb, are eligible to represent Monroe at the regional contest in March. In the event a first place winner is unable to participate, the second place winner then becomes eligible.
