MONROE - John Bauman is the featured speaker for the 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, meeting of the Green-Rock Audubon Society in the upstairs meeting room of the Monroe Public Library. From the Arctic waters of Alaska to the southern "roaring forties" of Tasmania, Bauman has kayaked in some of the most remote parts of the world. Many of his expeditions focused on circumnavigating large islands such as Kodiak Island in Alaska, Spitzbergen in the far North Atlantic, and the island nation of Iceland.
Join Bauman for a presentation about another circumnavigation, this time around the Falkland Islands off the east coast of Argentina. This remote archipelago is home to many bird species found no where else in the world. Come listen to the stories of the challenges and rewards of spending five weeks in wilderness solitude, be it camping amidst colonies of penguins or anxiously waiting for a break in the weather. Find out what it is like to paddle in frightening winds and huge waves, hoping to find a safe place to land before nightfall.
