K-9 unit to make cash 'magically'

DARLINGTON - The City of Darlington Police Department will be making money magically on Sunday, Jan. 10, in support of its effort to acquire a new K-9 Unit for the department.

Officers will be hosting Glen Gerard, a Milwaukee magician and illusionist, at 4 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Darlington High School auditorium for an awe-inspiring, family-oriented magic and variety show. This will be the department's first fundraiser for the new K-9 Unit since the Police Commission and City Council gave the green light last September for its implementation.

Gerard was dubbed "the top Midwest Magician and Illusionist" by Fox Television. He has performed at a variety of venues including in front of President Clinton, in the Smothers Brothers Show, as a headliner at the Las Vegas Comedy Festival, and much more.

Darlington residents will not see the new K-9 unit expense as part of their tax bill. Instead, officers have agreed to raise the approximate $25,000 needed through grants and fundraisers, thus giving individuals the option of deciding for themselves whether they wish to support the cause. This K-9 Unit, which is expected to be deployed in the fall of 2010, will be the first ever K-9 Unit deployed by the City of Darlington Police Department.

A portion of the ticket sales and every donation received at the magic show or received in the mail will be doubled by a matching grant from Alliant Energy.

Advance tickets are $7 and are available at all Darlington Banks, at City Hall, and from any Darlington police officer. Tickets will also be available at the door for $8. In addition, donation buckets will be on hand at the event for additional contributions. Anyone who cannot make it to the magic show but wishes to donate may send his donation to the Darlington Police Department K-9 Unit at 627 Main St.
