JUDA - The Juda High School Odyssey of the Mind team won the Wisconsin State Odyssey of the Mind Competition on Saturday, March 22.

The Odyssey of the Mind program provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

Juda sent two Division II teams to the State Odyssey of the Mind Competition in Madison. The teams received eighth and ninth places.

This year, a Division III level team, which is the high school level, competed at state and received first place. The first place finish gave the team an invitation to compete at the World Finals in May.

The seven Juda students on the World Finals qualifying team are freshmen Aurora Daniels and Nick Baum, sophomores Connor Brauer and Crista Hale, juniors Savanna Daniels and Emma Thompson, and senior Erica Turner. These students competed in the "Stackable Structure" problem, which is a balsa wood structure problem with a large focus on how much weight the multiple structures can hold after being stacked on top of one another, along with an artistic representation of the earth. They also produced a creative skit and song as part of their performance with the problem.

This is Juda's fourth year competing in the Odyssey of the Mind Program.

As many as 750 teams from around the world will compete at the world finals.

To make it to world finals, teams must have placed first in their state tournament and received a qualifying score.
