JUDA — Juda placed first in this year’s Division 4 Tri-State Math Meet at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Nov. 7.

Nearly 800 students from over 60 high schools in southwestern Wisconsin, eastern Iowa, and northwestern Illinois, referred to as the tri-state area, participated in this contest. Juda was one of the smallest schools, but had over half of its high school compete, with 65 students participating.

Scott Anderson, the high school math teacher at Juda, is quick to point out that “this is a big deal,” he said of the Juda Math Team. “We have an awesome group of students, over 60 of them, who work hard at math and put their best effort into the competition. It is simply mind boggling how they work and compete, winning a large meet is really hard.”

Senior Taylor Adkins has been a part of the competition for four years.

“It’s been such a great experience,” Adkins said. “It gives us a chance to take the knowledge we’ve learned in class and twist it so that we can apply it to these challenging questions. Beyond using our own problem-solving skills, we also have to function as a team, which is a fun aspect of the event.”

The meet consisted of an individual portion and a team portion. This year, Juda placed two students on the All-Academic Team. They were Dogukan Yetgin and Yiliam Liu.

Four schools from the Six River’s East, Albany, Juda, Monticello and Pecatonica, competed at the meet.

In Division 4, Juda took first place, Albany took second place and a tie for third was between River Ridge, Illinois and Mineral Point.
