JUDA - A wastewater treatment plant owned by Grande Cheese Company earned a 2007 Annual Municipal Facility and One Plant Operation Concrete Design Awards.
The awards are a part of a prestigious program showcasing best uses of ready-mixed concrete in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP). The Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association (WRMCA), Aon Risk Corporation, General Resource Technology, and the Wisconsin Chapter of ACI International cosponsored the annual awards, now entering its 29th year. A distinguished panel of Wisconsin/UP educators and construction professionals determined award winners.
The Wright Stuff themed Concrete Design Award ceremony took place on Thursday, March 5, at the Monona Terrace Convention Center, a past Concrete Design Award Winner, in Madison. Award program sponsors included Champion Inc., County Materials Corporation, GeoTest, Green Valley Ready Mix, Illinois/Wisconsin Cement Company, Meyer Material, The Phill Domask Consultancy, Verrette Materials, Wingra Red-Mix, and WR Grace.
The wastewater treatment plant presented unique and challenging demands to not only the engineering design team but special construction methods were required as well. The construction of a million gallon tank into a side hill was essential to meet site challenges and landscape design.
For the massive 12" thick mat and semi circular walls, concrete ready-mix was chosen for its diversity. Ninety-five percent of the total project required use of ready-mix. The mix designs ranged from 3,000 to 4,000 PSI. Slumps, water cement rations, airs, and PSI specs were closely monitored on every pour. Non-chloride accelerators were required on certain pours.
In addition, winter operations brought on more challenges, not only to the construction crews but to the ready-mix producer as well. Exterior durability and corrosion resistant pre-cast walls were chosen for the maintenance control building. The project start date was October 5, 2006 and it was completed on January 1, 2007. Approximately 1,677 cubic yards of concrete was required to complete the project.
In addition to owner Grande Cheese Company, project construction team members included:
Symbiont | General Contractor
C.D. Smith Construction | Sub Contractor
Green Valley Ready Mix Inc. | Project Ready-Mix Supplier
The Wisconsin Chapter of the American Concrete Institute works statewide to develop, share, and disseminate knowledge and information needed to utilize concrete to its fullest potential.
The Wisconsin Ready Mixed Concrete Association (WRMCA) is a statewide trade association consisting of ready-mixed concrete producer and associate members throughout the state and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
