JUDA - The Juda Volunteer Fire Department held its yearly recognition and social Saturday, Dec.12. The annual event was well attended at the Juda Community Center with 12 firefighters being recognized with service awards.
Spouses, greeted by JVFD secretary Judy Hale as they arrived, were presented with a gift certificate. Members and spouses enjoyed a social hour giving them time to "catch up" on family and friends and enjoy a few laughs.
After a social hour, the evening continued with a dinner served buffet-style. The catered meal, provided by Rackow Family Sausage, included green salad, green bean casserole, dinner rolls, baked chicken, prime rib and a baked potato with the works. Topping off the meal with a cake donated by Evelyn Coleman.
Following the meal Juda Fire Chief Steve Isely recapped the year. Isely noted that the Juda Volunteer Fire Department had responded to 105 calls so far. Isely stated, "That number is up from the normal 65 to 75 calls on an average year. The department had 27 MABAS assists this year. Isely added, "Another unusual event for us this year is our two MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) calls to the Town of Beloit. This is outside our normal range of service."
Service awards followed. For five years of service and receiving a pin: Tom Miller, Trish Miller and Nick Burger. Ten years of service and receiving a pin: Chad Jordan and Mark McCullough. Fifteen years of service and receiving a pin: Roger Johnson, Dennis Pfingston and Paul Riegle.
For 20 years of service, John Walters was recognized with a plaque. A ring is usually presented for 25 years of service. Rick Devoe and Earl Burger each were recognized as serving 25 years. The awards finished with former Fire Chief Gary Davis being recognized for 40 years of service.
Spouses were thanked for the sacrifices they make when their spouses practice and respond to calls. They were also thanked for all the extra help they provide at various fundraisers. A drawing for door prizes was held.
The respite from the hectic rush of daily life and volunteer service didn't last long. Many Juda firefighters finished the evening out with "a response to car crash call" due to the icy conditions around 9:15 p.m.
