MADISON - Juda FFA members were recognized in many areas at the Wisconsin FFA Convention from June 15 through 18 at the Alliant Energy Center. This was the 86th Wisconsin FFA Convention with the theme "Target Success-Take Action."
Jason Roth was elected to serve section five for 2015-2016 as Wisconsin FFA vice president. Roth went through four different interviews on June 15, completed a test and writing exercise on June 16. He made it into the delegate round on June 17 and was elected by the section five delegates to represent the 26 chapters in Green, Rock and Dane counties.
Ryan Schmitt was named the star in agriculture placement winner at the June 17 convention session. Agriculture placement is the category for FFA members whose supervised agricultural experience project is working for an employer in the agricultural industry. Students competing in the star area have to be students who are applying for their state FFA degree. Star candidates have to complete additional pages to their state FFA degree application and go through an interview to further explain their SAE program to a committee of agricultural educators and agriculture industry leaders. Schmitt received his Wisconsin FFA degree at the fifth general session.
Juda had two areas of participation in the state speaking contests. Roth was one of 10 participants in the prepared speaking contests, with his speech titled "Is Supply Shrinking in the Agricultural Workforce?"
After Roth gave his speech, he was selected to compete in the final four to another set of judges. Roth finished in third place in the competition and was recognized on the stage during the third general session.
Juda's middle school quiz bowl team consisted of Cole Mahlkuch, Jacob Mahlkuch, Emily Makos, Brian McCullough and Quinton Kammerer. In their first round of competition, Juda went up against the Randolph-Cambria-Friesland team. After three rounds of questions these teams were tied and therefore moved into a sudden-death round. After seven questions Randolph-Cambria-Friesland's team had edged out Juda by one point.
Schmitt won first place in the agricultural mechanics repair and maintenance placement proficiency award. He will now move on to the national competition. Roth placed second in the organic agriculture proficiency award area.
Juda FFA's dairy foods team was recognized on stage at the fourth general session on June 17. The team won first place at the state competition on April 24 in Madison. Team members are Morgan Adkins, placing first individually; Roth, placing second individually; Molly Marass; and Molly Salzwedel. The team will compete at the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in October.
Juda FFA also had five members participate in the FFA Honors Choir. They are Aurora Daniels, Todd Davis, Luke Jordan, Sara Jordan and Hailey Kammerer. The students practiced with the 80 other members of the choir during the week, and they performed during four of the seven convention sessions. They will also perform at the Wisconsin State Fair from Aug. 13 through 16.
Davis participated in the Wisconsin FFA talent competition and received a gold rating and a nomination to participate at the National FFA Convention.
Delegates for the Juda FFA were Kelsey Cramer and Danielle Dieckhoff. They were each assigned to a specific state FFA committee, voted on Wisconsin FFA bylaw changes and participated in the election of the new state FFA officer.
The Juda FFA also received recognition for two membership awards. The first was for having at least 10 more members than last year, and the second award was for having the highest percentage of school population as FFA members. Seventy-one percent of the middle school and high school students at Juda are members of the FFA.
The Wisconsin FFA Convention had a total attendance of 3,657 members, advisors and guests. The Wisconsin FFA Association has a current membership of 19,484 members from 250 FFA chapters.
