DARLINGTON - Bailey, Riley and Brett Jones, Darlington, showed the grand champion cow-calf pair at the 14th annual VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo on July 19. The cow-calf show was sponsored by Grandview CMR, Como, Miss.
The Jones family won the bred-and-owned cow-calf pair division and the overall title with Wildcat Enuff Baby 008. Sired by CH Enuff Prophet 2913, she is a March 2010 cow with a February heifer calf at side by CRR About Time 743. The family cow showed with expected progeny differences of birth weight of 6.3, weaning weight of 57, yearling weight of 96, milk was 21, and milk and growth was 50.
Judge Jeff Gooden, Iberia, Mo., picked the Joneses' pair out of 29 pairs shown.
"The two champions are deep-bodied, soft-middle, with tons of rib, and will certainly be tremendous brood cows," he said.
Brett Jones also placed eighth place in the intermediate division of the showmanship contest at the Junior National Hereford Expo.
The Joneses' sister, Lauren Jones, was also one of three youth chosen for their involvement in the Hereford industry on the local and national level. Each year the National Hereford Women and the National Junior Hereford Association sponsor the Prospect Awards for kids third through fifth grade. Winners are selected from each grade represented based on a written application.
Lauren Jones, 10, has been a member of the NJHA and the Wisconsin Junior Hereford Association for three years. She competed in both the 2011 and 2012 JNHE, but has been showing since she was 3 years old. This is her second year to participate in the Junior AI program.
