At Monroe Middle School, seventh-grade students have been studying issues related to Consumption. Consumption is the study of how people use the world’s resources to make goods, products and services. Students examined topics such as fossil fuels, recycling and food waste. Students were then challenged to explain how these topics could relate to their lives as seventh graders in Monroe. They could choose from several options; such as writing a persuasive essay, designing a brochure, writing and producing a commercial using makerspace technology, and writing a letter to the Monroe Times. Each of these projects had a common thread — increasing the effect that 12- to 13-year-old students can have on our community.

Hello, My name is Sydney Vita. I am a 7th grade student at the Monroe Middle School.

In my Social Studies class right now we are talking about all of the bad things going on in our world. The three worst things that are going right now in our society is Trash, Recycling, and pollution. But do not worry I am here to tell you how we can fix these problems because people and animals are getting sick and dying from these horrible geographic problems. First our trash problem, maybe some of us can think about what we are throwing away. For example some students at the Monroe Middle School get a slice of pizza and some oranges, then just eat the oranges and then they get up and throw away their slice of pizza. That right there is an example of trash that isn’t necessary. When you are throwing something away, think about if you can keep it or if it is actually necessary to throw it away. Next onto our recycling problems. Did u know that around 100,000 sea creatures die each year because of plastics and metals in the oceans? Well it sounds to me that 100,000 is a pretty big number and I want that to stop. An easy way to help fix that problem is don’t litter. Let’s say you are on a walk on the beach and are drinking from a plastic water bottle. After awhile the water will be gone and a huge portion of the population would just throw their plastic bottle on the ground. But sooner or later the plastic will end up in the water and the sea animals will eat it thinking that it’s food and will get sick and die. To me that is really sad. I want this to stop. Finally the pollution. The most common type of pollution comes from gasoline. This problem happens when eventually people will get sick and die because their are too many cars on the road. To fix this problem...When a group of people are going to the same place use the solution of carpooling. Carpooling is when a group of people all go to the same place in one car or truck. This reduces the amount of gasoline in the air.

When you think about these problems anyone and everyone can help to fix them. So as a community let’s get together and reduce the amount of pollution, trash, and recycling in our society.
