MONROE - The questions seem endless: Is it simple heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux? Is medication effective and how does it work? Are there any new treatments?

Monroe Clinic's General Surgeon Nicholas Maxwell, M.D., will host "Heartburn Solutions," in two community workshops designed to clear up the confusion surrounding this common problem. The first workshop will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, in Monroe Clinic's Founders Hall in Monroe. The second workshop will be presented at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at the Freeport Public Library, located at 100 E. Douglas St. in Freeport. The public is invited to attend these free events, which will cover information regarding:

• how to navigate the "medication maze"

• how to decrease health risks connected with chronic heartburn

• what the newest treatment options are, and if they're right for the individual.

Dr. Maxwell has practiced general surgery at Monroe Clinic since 1989 and has taught at University of Wisconsin-Madison for 12 years. In 2004, he was honored as University of Wisconsin-Madison's Clinical Teacher of the Year.

Refreshments will be served. To register for this event, call toll-free (877) 865-1462 or go to monroeclinic.org and click on Classes and Events.
