MONROE - St. John's United Church of Christ, Monroe, will celebrate its 150th anniversary, beginning with a free public hymn sing at 7 p.m. today, Aug. 25 in the sanctuary, 1724 14th St.
Deborah Krauss Smith, St. John's organist/director of music, will lead the one-hour event titled "Mostly American: Great Hymns of the 19th Century." Featuring familiar hymns and commentary about them, this is a repeat of a hymn sing presented earlier this year at the Overture Center, Madison, and at First Congregational Church, Beloit.
The congregation will continue its celebration on Sunday, Aug. 26 with an anniversary service at 9 a.m., featuring music by the Bells of Praise, and a special anthem called "We are the Children of Promise," sung by the combined sanctuary and children's/junior choirs. Former clergy and staff in attendance will also be recognized. Following the service, a congregational picture will be taken on the church's front steps and 150 balloons released. The remainder of the day's activities will be held at the SLICE, at 1632 4th Ave. West. The activities will include a potluck, games, musical entertainment and a short program.
