Honoring Peace Officers
national police week

The City of Darlington Municipal Building was illuminated in blue the week of May 12 to 18 in honor of National Police Week.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week.

In lighting the municipal building, the City of Darlington honored all who serve or served in law enforcement, and remembered past Chiefs of Police William McGinty and Frank Moran.

Chief McGinty died from a heart attack while fighting with a drunkard he arrested on Main Street in front of the courthouse in 1933. Chief Moran died after being struck by a car while checking registration plates on Main Street in 1927.
