JANESVILLE - William Holland of Monroe will give a presentation on "Find a Grave," a free online resource for finding headstones and burial information, at the Rock County Genealogical Society program Sept. 20.
The program will follow a brief business meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Helen Jeffris Wood Museum Center, 426 N. Jackson St., Janesville, at the Tallman Restorations. The program is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped-accessible with handicapped parking in the rear of the museum center.
Holland's "Find a Grave" presentation is aimed at beginning genealogists. It covers his accidental discovery of "Find a Grave," exploring why the site exists, navigating the site, interesting parts of the site, how memorials can be put on the site and how genealogy is involved. It also covers why "Find a Grave" needs volunteers to add information to the site. After his presentation, Holland will do some personal searches for attendees to demonstrate the ease of the process.
Holland was born in Madison and was raised in Gratiot. He served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. Holland graduated from nursing school in 1968 and worked as a registered nurse at Monroe Clinic Hospital for 42 years, retiring in 2011. His hobbies include prairie restoration and restoration of old cars. Holland is involved with genealogical projects and updating cemeteries through Lafayette County Genealogical Society and Green County Genealogical Society.
The Rock County Genealogical Society meets the third Tuesday of the month from September through May to promote an interest in genealogy. The topic of the October meeting will be "Cobbler, Tailor, Trunkmaker: How My Grandpappies Made a Living," by Ginger Frere.
