MONROE - Members of Historic Monroe, Inc. held their last meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Depot Welcome Center. Historic Monroe is dissolving at the end of this year citing changing demographics and a lack of new younger members as a reason for the dissolution.

Historic Monroe, Inc. was formed 20 years ago in 1988 and has been a leader in encouraging restoration and preservation of buildings and artifacts in Monroe.

One of the first projects undertaken by Historic Monroe was to present bronze plaques to all the National Register sites in Monroe including the Green County Courthouse, Turner Hall and the Monroe Arts Center as well as all the homes presently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic Monroe's most notable achievement was the complete renovation of the Milwaukee Road Depot and moving it to its present site; also the purchase and restoration of the Milwaukee Road Caboose which sits beside the Depot.

This past year Historic Monroe arranged for the restoration of the Civil War cannons located on the Courthouse Square and purchased two authentic Civil War gun carriages.

Historic Monroe also commissioned Jeanne Ausmus to draw accurate pictures of the old North, East, South Schools, Lincoln School, the old St. Victor School, and the Green County Normal School as these schools are no longer in existence. Many people in Monroe attended these schools and the pictures provide a wonderful memory. These pictures are now on display in the Monroe Library.

Any organization that gave important records to Historic Monroe for safe-keeping may rest assured they will be looked after and continue to be stored in the archive room located in the basement of the Depot.

The assets of Historic Monroe will be turned over to the Historic Cheesemaking Center and they will continue to operate out of the Depot building and run the Historic Cheesemaking Center and the Green County Welcome Center.
