Assassination of Garfield
Location: Mount Carroll Public Library, 208 N. Main Street, Mount Carroll

Learn about the assassination of President James Garfield from the shooting on the morning of July 2, 1881 to his death on September 19. Biographies of Garfield and assassin Charles Guiteau (who grew up in Freeport), U.S. culture, medical treatment, and the capture, trial and execution of Guiteau will be explored.
Beginner Pickleball
Location: Krape Park, 1799 S. Park Boulevard, Freeport

Pickleball, a cross between badminton and tennis, is the fastest-growing sport among baby boomers in America! Learn to play pickleball, including the rules and equipment involved, and have fun during this introductory course.
Sunflower Weaving
Location: Higher Grounds Coffee, 1709 S. West Avenue, Freeport

Learn two beginner weaving techniques to create a 10”-12” round sunflower weaving with Catherine from The Urban Art Studio. The cost includes a variety of fibers in assorted colors to choose from, a pre-warped metal hoop and instruction.
Beekeeping Experience
Location: Dry Creek Beekeeping, 489 South Clark Lane, Elizabeth

Get up close and personal (safely) by wearing a beekeeping suit and visiting a working hive to see the bees at work. Learn all about honeybees, their roles in the hive and how they make honey. Then, get to try their liquid gold with a mini-honey tasting. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Parent/Child Pie Party
Location: Highland Community College, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Cafeteria, Room 101, Freeport

Is there a budding chef in the house who is looking for something fun to do? Guardians and kids 9 years and older are invited to join us to make two kinds of hand pies — one sweet and one savory. This is a great opportunity to spend time together, then take home and bake something for the family to enjoy. Each pair must bring a large sheet pan, medium and small mixing bowls, a cutting board, a paring knife, a rubber spatula, a rolling pin and a damp towel in a plastic bag for cleanup. Indicate the name of the child in notes when registering.
