FREEPORT — Highland Community College Lifelong Learning March and April classes include Write Your First Novel (In 90 Days), Mosaic Masterpieces: Design Your Own Fish, Sourdough Bread and Homemade Jam, Korean War Uncovered: History, Battles, and Cultural Impact, and Welding for Garden Art - Bug.

Mosaic Masterpieces: Design Your Own Fish

Location: Mt. Morris Senior and Community Center, 9 E. Front Street, Mt. Morris, Ill.

Class: Mar. 22; 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 

Fee: $135 

Instructor: Luann Smith 

Join us for a mosaic workshop where you’ll create a fish or school of fish on a small panel using glass, beads, china, and found objects. Learn basic design, cutting techniques, and how to use cement mortar as adhesive. Bring your own found objects if desired. Beginners welcome!


Sourdough Bread and Homemade Jam

Location: Lena Brewing Company, 9416 W. Wagner Road, Lena, Ill.

Join us to learn the art of making sourdough bread and delicious homemade jam! Discover the fermentation process for perfect, crusty bread and learn how to create flavorful jams using seasonal fruits. You’ll leave with a taste of fresh bread, a jar of jam, and the skills to recreate these delights at home. All materials provided!


Korean War Uncovered: History, Battles, and Cultural Impact

Location: Lena Community District Library, 300 W. Mason Street, Lena, Ill.

Instructor: Mark Peterson

This class delves into the Korean War, exploring Korea’s cultural background, the Japanese occupation, and post-WWII division. It discusses events leading to North Korea’s attack and reviews key battles such as Pusan Perimeter, Inchon, Chosin Reservoir, and Soyang River, while comparing present-day North and South Korea. Please join us for this free event sponsored by the Lena Community District Library.


Welding for Garden Art - Bug

Location: Highland Community College, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Building T, Room 127 Freeport, Ill.

Class: Mar. 31; 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Instructor: Roger Hicks

Learn basic mig welding techniques to create a unique metal insect for your garden. This is a hands-on class, please dress appropriately to work in a shop, including long sleeves, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and no loose clothing. No prior welding experience necessary. All materials provided.
