DARLINGTON - The Lafayette County Health Department has been preparing for a Flu (influenza) Pandemic for the past several years. The novel H1N1 influenza virus (Swine Flu) is expected to return this fall with throughout the United States and the health department is working to provide information and vaccine to those who need it and want it in order to keep residents healthy.
The first order of business will be to offer the regular or seasonal flu shot. The vaccine is expected to arrive early September. The health department has been told by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) that the seasonal flu vaccine should be offered earlier than the usual timeframe of mid-October so agencies can prepare for the H1N1 Vaccine. The health department will begin regular seasonal flu clinics on September 21. If Medicare Part B is your primary insurance - the flu vaccine is a covered benefit. For those without Medicare as primary insurance, the cost is $30 for influenza vaccine.
As for the H1N1 Vaccine, the plans are tentative and the health dept. is working with community partners to prepare for the administration of the vaccine when it arrives. Unlike the seasonal influenza, children and young adults appear to be at higher risk than older adults, so the CDC has determined the following target groups will be offered vaccine first:
Individuals 6 months to 24 years
Pregnant women
Health Care Workers
Individuals 25 to 65 years of age with medical problems.
Caregivers of children under 6 months of age
The Health Department's plan is to work collaboratively with the schools to do school-based vaccination clinics. Community partners will assist with the other target groups. The H1N1 vaccine will be given in a two dose schedule. The novel H1N1 flu vaccine will be supplied free, with the target groups being immunized first. As the season goes along, and vaccine is available, it may be offered to the rest of the population.
